چکیده

Triggered-lightning properties, including dart-leader charge density, return-stroke propagation speed, dart-leader electric potential, dart-leader propagation speed, and dart-leader current, inferred from return-stroke current and very close electric field measurements, are presented. Although most of the estimates are based on relatively crude models, they are all generally in good agreement with independent measurements and/or theoretical considerations found in the literature. The results are likely to be applicable to subsequent strokes in natural lightning. D 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Lightning Properties Inferred from Measurements of Very Close Electric Fields

Lightning properties including dart -leader charge density, return-stroke propagation speed, dart -leader electric potential, and dart-leader propagation speed, inferred from current and close electric field measurements are presented. Although all estimates presented here are based on rather crude models, they are generally in remarkably good agreement with independent measurements and/or theo...

Insights into the ground attachment process of natural lightning gained from an unusual triggered-lightning stroke

[1] We present measured electric and magnetic field and current derivatives from an unusual triggered-lightning stroke that was initiated by a dart-stepped leader and that involved an upward connecting leader. The initial rising portion of the current (integrated dI/dt) waveform is composed of a ‘‘slow front’’ rising to 20 kA in 2.2 ms, followed by a ‘‘fast transition’’ from 20 to 27 kA in 0.2 ...

Test of the transmission line model and the traveling current source model with triggered lightning return strokes at very close range

[1] We test the two simplest and most conceptually different return stroke models, the transmission line model (TLM) and the traveling current source model (TCSM), by comparing the first microsecond of model-predicted electric and magnetic field wave forms and field derivative wave forms at 15 m and 30 m with the corresponding measured wave forms from triggered lightning return strokes. In the ...

Determination of the electric field intensity and space charge density versus height prior to triggered lightning

[1] We infer the vertical profiles of space charge density and electric field intensity above ground by comparing modeling and measurements of the ground‐level electric field changes caused by elevating grounded lightning‐triggering wires. The ground‐level electric fields at distances of 60 m and 350 m were measured during six wire launches that resulted in triggered lightning. The wires were l...

Close electric field signatures of dart leader/return stroke sequences in rocket-triggered lightning showing residual fields

[1] Vertical electric field waveforms due to dart leader/return stroke sequences measured on the ground 15 and 30 m from the negative lightning channel are used to examine the so-called residual electric field, the difference between the leader electric field change, and the following return stroke electric field change. At these distances, no residual field is expected if the return stroke neu...
